CCNY junior and NYWICI 2014 Scholar Kar Yee Au.
Kar Yee Au, a junior in The City College of New York's media and communication arts (MCA) department, is one of 17 exceptional students named New York Women in Communications (NYWICI) Scholars for 2014. The recipients of the highly competitive award were selected on the basis of academic excellence, need and a demonstrated commitment to the field of communications.
Ms. Au holds a 3.54 GPA and is pursuing a dual major inadvertising and public relations and Jewish Studies. She is currently interning at the Manhattan PR firm, Child's Play Communications, and is also the founder of karyeeSays, a personal blog. As a NYWICI Scholar, she will receive a $5,000 scholarship for tuition and a paid summer internship with Interpublic Group, a holding company with several major advertising and public relations agencies in its portfolio.
The honor also earns her an invitation to the NYWICI 2014Matrix Awards April 28 at The Waldorf Astoria hotel in midtown Manhattan.
"Being named a NYWICI Scholar just opens up a tremendous amount of doors for me in the communications field and I'm extremely excited and grateful for being selected," said Ms. Au, a Brooklyn resident who was born in Puerto Rico to Chinese immigrant parents.
In addition to the Matrix Awards, which she called a fabulous networking opportunity, she said NYWICI provides scholars access to mentors and recognizes them as its ambassadors.
Ms. Au is the second City College student to be named a NYWICI Scholar. Stephanie Guzman was chosen in 2010.
NYWICI's Class of 2014 also includes students from Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, Pace University, Rutgers University and the University of Pennsylvania. The award is open to residents of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania.
