Dear Friends and Colleagues, I'd like to take this opportunity to wish each of you a happy and safe thanksgiving. City College of New York Biochemistry major Md Shamiul Kabir is this year’s best oral presentation winner among premedical and medical students at the Student National Medical Association’s Region IX Research Education Conference. The Bronx resident, a senior who arrived in the United States ten years ago from Bangladesh speaking no English, was one of four finalists in the category at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the East Bronx. The City College of New York is joining the global day of giving with #CCNYGives, a 24-hour campaign to raise funds in support of student scholarships. On Tuesday, November 29, every $5,000 raised will provide a student with a scholarship for one year. #CCNYGives is part of #CUNYTUESDAY’s initiative to raise a total of $1 million to benefit students at all 24 CUNY colleges. Angelo Lampousis, lecturer in City College of New York’s Division of Science, is the recipient of a $70,000 grant from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to support standards education in undergraduate and graduate curricula. For the second year running, a City College of New York team of student engineers is back from AIChE’s Chem-E- Car Competition in San Francisco with the Spirit of Competition Award. In addition, “Iodonator – C8,” the latest chemical powered vehicle designed by Grove School of Engineering undergraduates, placed 11th in the Chem-E-Car performance competition. Gilda A. Barabino, dean and Berg Professor in the Grove School of Engineering at The City College, is the winner of AIChE’s 2016 William W. Grimes Award for Excellence in Chemical Engineering. The honor is in recognition of her outstanding achievements as a distinguished role model for underrepresented minorities in chemical engineering through mentoring, contributions to the community and for her excellent scientific contributions to the advancement of chemical engineering. The Alumni Association of The City College of New York’s annual dinner at the Hilton hotel is always a big night for both CCNY alumni and current students. In addition to Townsend Harris medals to select alumni for outstanding postgraduate achievement, the event celebrates academic excellence. This year, 60 students are recipients of Alumni Association scholarships for their academic achievements. Kevin R. Foster is the Interim Dean of the Colin Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership. His appointment follows the naming of the School’s dean, Vincent Boudreau, as Interim President of The City College of New York. An Associate Professor, Foster has served as chair of the Colin Powell School’s department of Economics and Business, where he has taught since joining City College in 1998.
