Going Beyond Diversity: Frameworks for Understanding Power and Navigating Difference

The MPA Program strives to create an inclusive environment where people’s diverse experiences can enrich our learning space and spur discussions of how to transform our society’s institutions and eradicate oppression in its multiple dimensions.

The latest workshop in our fall series introduced a broad framework for understanding power, privilege, and oppression and the myriad ways that individuals experience systems of power in our society.

Participants in the workshop also explored interpersonal power dynamics and discussed ways to navigate differences within their cohorts and support equitable change in their workplaces and social movement organizations.

The facilitator was Leigh Thompson, founder of Go Beyond Diversity, a strategic consulting and training company specializing in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). Leigh has decades of experience with critical pedagogy, Theatre of the Oppressed, and organizational management consulting, as well as deep knowledge of how to grow DEI competency among advocates, artists, business leaders and educators around the world.

Leigh will return to the MPA Program to give a workshop in the summer 2022 MPA practitioner lab.
