MPA Alum, Now Chief of Staff in Dept. of Housing, Speaks with Students about City Government Careers

The MPA Fall Workshop Series aims not only to develop students’ career-building skills but also to connect students to career pathways and networks in the field.

The latest workshop gave students the opportunity to explore city government careers by speaking with a team of professionals from the NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD).

Jashawn Frederick, a graduate of the MPA Program, gave students an overview of the work performed at HPD’s Office of Policy and Strategy, where he is now Chief of Staff.

Frederick was joined by Lucy Joffe, Assistant Commissioner for Housing Policy, as well as two project managers from the HPD policy team, Cassie Hackel and St. Clair Logan.

The four professionals discussed the types of policy analysis and data-driven research they produce often at the request of the Mayor’s Office. They also spoke about the key skills necessary to build a career in policy research and in city government more broadly, and they described their different career trajectories in the field.

The HPD team will return as part of the spring 2022 workshop series to introduce students to further skills and career pathways in city government.
