Miruna Ghinia-Tegla

Miruna

Miruna studies developmental neuroscience as a postdoctoral researcher in the laboratory of Dr. Mark Emerson, in the CCNY Biology Department. She accomplished her predoctoral training in her home country, Romania, after which she left to follow her dream to pursue a career in science at prestigious institutions abroad. First, she started her PhD at the National Eye Institute of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland and completed at the Institute of Neuroscience of the National Research Council, in Pisa, Italy, then joined our institution.

Besides her strong interest in sciences, Miruna is a constant supporter of empowering women and underrepresented groups. In her early career, as a master student in Romania, she was part of a large-scale outreach program, where she connected with more than 5,000 girls, age 10 to 16, from more than 300 schools across the country, from metropolitan to rural areas. Her attributes were to teach young girls the basic aspects of their biology, to the values of independence and inner confidence.

As a postdoctoral researcher, Miruna is empowered by the success of her trainees, who she mentors for research activities, as well as coaching them to achieve their immediate career goals.

Miruna is member of our organization from 2016, when she joined our mentoring program. She took the position of events coordinator last year, organizing several events that targeted students at different stages of their career, aiming for enriching their awareness about career development, and how to overcome obstacles found along that path.

Ultimately, her goal is to work in Academia, in an environment that is equally welcoming for everyone, independent of race, sexual orientation or country of origin, and she will canalize all efforts to reach this goal.
