In this article, Dr Stephen O'Brien presents results of his collaborations with Alpha-En Corporation. The research conducted during his sabbatical focused on improving manufacturing processes of Lithium Ion batteries, investigating the possibility of removing lithium-ion-housing graphite and replacing it with pure lithium metal. Though feasible, the process poses multiple challenges that are not easily and reliably overcome using current battery chemistry. With Alpah-En's new lithium metal extraction process, lithium metal thin film can be produced at a much lower cost and with much greater purity, thus making batteries a more efficient energy storage medium. Smaller and lighter batteries have a potential to be another catalyst for further adaptation of electric power for our daily needs.
