The CCNY Math Placement Test is administered to incoming students to determine appropriate placement into mathematics and mathematics-related courses at The City College of New York. Incoming first-year students who have met the CUNY mathematics proficiency requirement are required to complete the CCNY Math Placement Test.
The CCNY Math Placement Test does not affect admission to the College. However, the results determine the mathematics course(s) for which you are eligible based on your major requirements and/or major entry criteria.
Test Format
The CCNY Math Placement Test is administered in person, is timed, and consists of multiple-choice questions. The assessment includes five sections, with 10 questions in each section. You are given 30 minutes to complete each section:
- Basic Skills — 30 minutes
- Algebra I — 30 minutes
- Algebra II — 30 minutes
- Trigonometry — 30 minutes
- Advanced Skills — 30 minutes
Calculators are not permitted during the examination.
Placement Test Policies
Scores on the CCNY Math Placement Test are valid only for The City College of New York, and you are permitted to take the test once.
CCNY Math Placement Test results cannot be appealed. The placement score reflects your demonstrated mathematical skills at the time of testing and is used to determine the most appropriate mathematics course placement.
If you believe your math course placement does not accurately reflect your academic background or prior coursework, you may contact the CCNY Department of Mathematics to discuss your placement options and determine whether additional review is appropriate.
