In City College’s social studies education program, you will build teaching and reflective skills that prepare you for a career in middle and high school classrooms. You’ll consult research and theory that illuminates the qualities of good teaching.  You’ll plan and execute lessons in authentic New York City classrooms and reflect on these teaching experiences with course instructors and mentoring, cooperating teachers.  You’ll draw on and develop knowledge of history, civic engagement, inquiry processes, and methods of teaching so to support your classroom practice. You’ll cultivate your appreciation for the varied strengths of diverse learners and extend these strengths to promote student engagement in the classroom and beyond. City College prepares students to meet standards of excellence as social studies teachers.

Admissions Facts

Initial Certificate in Social Studies Education

This program leads to an M.A. in Secondary Social Studies Education and is designed for those who have no or little background in education coursework. Admission requirements include:

• Completion of an undergraduate history or social science major or equivalent, with a minimum of 21 credits in history;
• Minimum 3.0 overall undergraduate GPA and in the major;
• Two letters of recommendation;
• Attend an interview and complete an on-site essay.

Professional Certificate in Social Studies Education

This program leads to an M.A. in Secondary Social Studies Education and is designed for those who are certified to teach secondary social studies. Admission requirements include:

• Completion of an undergraduate history or social science major or equivalent;
• Minimum 3.0 overall undergraduate GPA and in the major;
• Evidence of New York State Initial Certification in Social Studies, including NYSTCE examinations;
• Two letters of recommendation;
• Attend an interview and complete an onsite essay.

Advanced Certificate in Social Studies Education

This program leads to a teaching certificate in Social Studies Education and is designed for those who hold an M.A. or advanced degree. Admission requirements include:

• Completion of an undergraduate or graduate history or social science major or equivalent, with a minimum of 21 credits in history;
• Minimum 3.0 overall undergraduate GPA and in the major;
• Completion of a graduate degree in one of the areas approved by NYSED with a minimum 3.0 GPA in that degree;
• Two letters of recommendation;
• Attend an interview and complete an on-site essay.
