Life Science Cares New York donates $50K to CCNY’s CiPASS initiatives

The City College of New York’s Initiative to Promote Academic Success in STEM (CiPASS) is the recipient of a $50,000 grant from Life Science Cares New York to support student programming. In collaboration with the Division of Science’s Biology Department, CiPASS will use the grant to create and deliver hands-on, project-based lab skills and training workshops to at least 40 City College students.

CiPASS’s mission is to increase the number of underrepresented minorities studying STEM at CCNY by supporting them in their studies and providing resources and experiences to gain workplace skills that will help them reach their career goals.

Set to begin in the spring of 2024, the curriculum will focus on teaching in-demand lab skills to better prepare students for internships and employment in Biotech and Pharma industries in New York City. The workshop series will incorporate critical feedback from industry focus groups on the most in-demand skills.

The workshops, focusing on lab skills, are slated to run during the spring semester and will be an intensive program that will include site visits and guest speakers from the life sciences through connections with Life Science New York .

In addition to hands-on technical skills, students will learn soft skills and receive post-program support through an existing mentoring program. They will also receive specialized support from CCNY’s Career and Professional Development Institute to apply for Project OnRamp and other competitive internship placements.

About Life Science Cares New York:

Life Science Cares was founded in 2016 by a consortium of life science executives on a mission to give back beyond their 9-5 commitment to improving health.

The organization is a collective effort of life science companies to eliminate the impacts of poverty on our neighbors and currently operates in five communities: Boston, Philadelphia, San Diego, the Bay Area and New York.

In each of these areas there exists a cluster of life science companies and in their shadow, thousands living in poverty. We believe that with so much success, wealth, and intellect in our industry, we can’t sit back while so many are suffering.

At City College, more than 15,000 students pursue undergraduate and graduate degrees in eight schools and divisions, driven by significant funded research, creativity and scholarship. This year, CCNY launched its most expansive fundraising campaign, ever. The campaign, titled “Doing Remarkable Things Together” seeks to bring the College’s Foundation to more than $1 billion in total assets in support of the College mission.
