Scientist leads team that wins $2 million NSF grant

A City College of New York Physics Department team led by Professor Vinod Menon, in collaboration with Assistant Professor Pouyan Ghaemi, is using a $2 million National Science Foundation Emerging Frontiers in Research and Innovation grant for its project, Excitonics and Polaritonics using 2D materials (ExPo2D). The four-year project aims to develop the next generation of photonic and electronic systems and sub-systems that exploit the unique advantages of atomically thin (graphene-like) semiconductors. Grove School’s Castaldi is latest CCNY Fulbright award winner

Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering Marco J. Castaldi of the Grove School of Engineering is a Fulbright Global Award winner for his continuing work on converting solid waste materials to energy, chemicals or fuels. Castaldi’s research involves transforming waste materials, such as biomass and municipal solid waste, to energy and chemicals. The residuals from that transformation, such as ash and char, are recycled into valuable products such as catalysts and adsorbents for energy and environmental applications. Black History Month events at City College

The City College of New York’s annual Black History Month observances this year include discussions on cultural and social issues, along with live performances and music. Legendary art director, designer and ad man George Lois is gifting his archives to The City College of New York. Designated the "The George Lois Big Idea Archive," the collection comprises films, TV and radio commercials, print ads, posters, scripts, correspondences, photos, memorabilia and numerous other items from a remarkable career spanning more than 65 years. The archive will be open to the public and be available for educational and research purposes. More than 50 City College of New York students and staff honor Martin Luther King, Jr. this year with a clean-up effort in Jamaica Bay from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 16. The volunteerism is part of the institution’s annual community-focused Martin Luther King Day of Service organized by CityServ in observance of the slain civil rights leader’s birthday. Two researchers get boost with new award

Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering Susannah Fritton of the Grove School of Engineering and Associate Professor of Biology Anuradha Janakiraman of the Division of Science are the first recipients of the Harvey L. Karp ’49 Discovery Award in the Sciences. Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education students in their fifth year rotation at St. Barnabas Hospital reflect the racial, geographical and aspirational diversity of City College of New York and of New York City. Baho Sidiqi was born in Mazar Sharif, Afghanistan, grew up in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, and moved to Queens with his family when he was eight. After graduation from Benjamin N.
