Grades based on: Class participation – 20%

2 midterms – 15% each

2 quizzes – 5% each

Final exam – 40%

Midterm One: Mar 6, Mar 8

Midterm Two: Apr 10, Apr 12

Final Presentation: May 8, May 10

1. Historical perspective and some key observations:

The Bohr Model, wave-particle duality.

2. Introduction to atomic physics:

The Schroedinger equation and atomic orbitals.

3. Fundamentals of solid state physics:

Particles in periodic potentials, metals and semiconductors.

4. Spin physics

Quantum spintronics, magnetic resonance

5. Quantum optics

Introduction to laser physics

6. Quantum information processing

Entanglement, Bell inequality, basic quantum algorithms
