Since 1993, the mission of the Urban Scholars Program has been to provide participants with the support necessary to become the leaders of tomorrow. Our program is committed to ensuring that each student receives the necessary tools for social and academic advancement. We first identify the specific needs of our participants and provide them with quality academic and enrichment activities that not only foster academic and social growth but also the successful transition into post-secondary education and future entry-level careers.

Goals

  • Provide participants with the support, resources, and network necessary to become the leaders of tomorrow.
  • Provide exposure to new and exciting opportunities and activities that are not readily available to many students.
  • Assist students in determining their best-fit post-secondary pathway:
    1. Provide holistic college access and success workshops to all students, and assist college-bound students with the college application process
    2. Assist students in career mapping and skill inventories to determine best-fit career paths.
  • Develop strong social & and emotional learning skills to navigate everyday challenges through Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness & Responsible Decision-making.
  • Build strong relationships with the students, their families, and school administrators to provide targeted, individualized programming inside and outside of the classroom.

Program Offerings

In the Urban Scholars Program, students have the opportunity to participate in:

  • Cultural exposure event and activities
  • Academic Enrichment Activities
  • Career preparation and exposure events
  • College inquiry through multi-day day college tours, college residential experiences and college workshops

Liberty Partnership Program

  • Program Overview:  
    "LPP was established in 1988 under Section 612, Subdivision 6 of the Education Law to address the significant dropout rate among New York’s youth. The Program is included in the New York State Education Department’s Statewide Plan for Higher Education as part of its strategy to maximize the successful transition of middle and high school students, who are at risk of dropping out of school, into graduates who are fully prepared for the rigors of higher education and the competitive demands of the workplace." There are over 50 projects/collaborations with higher education services throughout the state of New York...LPP connects schools and community partners to offer research-based interventions, including tutorial services, mentoring, socio-emotional counseling, career and college exploration activities, and enrichment, as well as support for students and their families."

Talent Search

  • Program Overview:
    The Educational Talent Search (ETS) is a federally funded educational program authorized by the Higher Education Act of 1965 for high school students and middle students. Our program is designed for middle and high school students from targeted NYC schools. We provide ongoing, year-round, academic preparation, counseling, and enrichment activities. The program’s design promotes the development and enhancement of student's basic skills, academics and cultural enrichment, and the motivation necessary to matriculate and graduate from college. 
  • Where We Serve:
    Attend a target high school (A. Phillip Randolph Campus High School, Frederick Douglas Academy High School, Mott Hall High School, City College High School of the Arts, Urban Assembly Global Commerce High School, and Urban Assembly Performing Arts High School ) or live in a target neighborhood (East Harlem)

Upward Bound

  • Program Overview:
    Upward Bound is a nationwide, federally funded educational program authorized by the Higher Education Act of 1964 for high school students. The program provides ongoing, year-round, academic preparation, counseling, and enrichment activities. The Program’s design promotes the development and enhancement of students’ basic skills, academic and cultural enrichment, and the motivation necessary to matriculate and graduate from college. The program is cost-free to families and students receive a small stipend for their participation in the summer program.
