In She Stoops to Conquer, Hastings and Marlow are tricked into believing the home of Mr. Hardcastle is an inn. Both behave badly. After the confusion is cleared up, however, Marlow is free to marry Hardcastle's daughter. ... Mr. Hardcastle wants his daughter Kate to marry Sir Charles Marlow, a shy but handsome man.

  • Mrs. Hardcastle wants her ward Constance to marry Mr. Hardcastle's son from another marriage, Tony Lumpkin. However, there's another suitor, Hastings, who's coming down from London in hopes of winning Constance's hand in marriage.

  • Mr. Hardcastle wants his daughter Kate to marry Sir Charles Marlow, a shy but handsome man. Marlow and Hastings travel from London, but are tricked by Tony into believing the Hardcastle home is an inn.

  • Marlow and Hastings behave boorishly, and Kate disguises herself as a barmaid to see if Marlow is really that shy. He isn't, but when he learns her true identity, he's embarrassed. Eventually, the confusion is cleared up, and both couples marry.
