Margo Groenewoud is a Senior Lecturer and Researcher within the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences at the University of Curaçao Dr. Moises Da Costa Gomez. She is also a member of the University of Curaçao Research Institute’s Board of Directors and a Researcher within the Traveling Caribbean Heritage Project, funded by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research. This initiative serves to expand knowledge about the historical linkages among the Caribbean autonomous countries and public entities of the Dutch Kingdom: Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao. During the 2022-2023 academic year, she is also a Scholar-in-Residence at City College, CUNY. As a CUNY DSI Research Fellow, Dr. Groenewoud will expand upon such investigations of connection and kinship within the Dutch Lesser Antilles and broader Caribbean to include the Dominican Republic. Through a combination of archival research conducted at CUNY DSI and in the Dominican Republic and oral history research performed in Dutch-Dominican communities, Dr Groenewoud will shed new light on the 500+ year old relationship between Dominicans and Dutch Caribbean. Her research will culminate in a CUNY DSI Research Monograph that contextualizes and analyzes Dutch-Dominican engagements specifically from 1916 to 1961.
