In 1998, the CUNY Dominican Studies Institute received recognition as a bona fide Latino research center, earning membership in the Inter-University Program for Latino Research (IUPLR), a national consortium of university-based centers dedicated to the advancement of the Latino intellectual presence in the United States. IUPLR works to: 1) expand the pool of Latino scholars and leaders, 2) increase the availability of policy-relevant Latino-focused research, 3) strengthen the network of centers, and 4) enhance their institutional capacity. Within IUPLR, the Dominican Studies Institute leads the "Reflecting on the Spanish Caribbean Working Group," a group of academics focused on the study of Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic. The Working Group is pursuing the establishment of the Spanish Caribbean as an area of graduate studies in academia in the United States. For more information, visit IUPLR's website.
Since its inception, the CUNY Dominican Studies Institute has effectively collaborated with universities, research centers, museums, schools, and community organizations in the United States and abroad.
