Congratulations, Associate Dean Ratner!

Andrew RatnerDr. Andrew Ratner was officially appointed Associate Dean of the School of Education. Professor Ratner earned his B.A. in Art Semiotics from Brown University, and his M.A. and Ed.D. in English Education from Teachers College, Columbia University. Prior to his career as a university professor and administrator, he taught English and Civics in grades 7-12, designed innovative curricula, and lead teacher development for newly launched and established middle schools and high schools in New York City; Newark, New Jersey; and New Orleans, Louisiana. 

Since joining the School of Education faculty in 2003 as an Assistant Professor of Secondary Education, Professor Ratner has served as Program Director of the English Education program, Chair of the Department of Teaching & Learning, and Deputy Dean. In 2015, he won the President’s Award for Outstanding Service. He has taught numerous courses, including Teaching of Writing, Teaching of Reading, Reading and Writing Across the Curriculum, and Educational Research. His research interests include critical perspectives on literacy education, and issues in urban teaching and teacher preparation. Professor Ratner has published his research in several national and international journals, including English Journal, English Record, Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy, Schools: Studies in Education, and Education Policy Analysis Archives. Since its publication in 2009, his book Street Lit: Teaching and Reading of Fiction in the Urban High School (McGraw Hill) has been a valued resource for middle school and high school English teachers.   

Over his nineteen-year career at CCNY, Professor Ratner has continued supporting public school teachers and schools in underserved communities, consulting, and conducting teacher and teacher leader development for distinguished educational organizations including the Institute for Student Achievement, Teachers College Reading and Writing Project, and the KIPP (Knowledge is Power Program) network of charter schools. He currently participates on a School of Education team that works with teachers and administrators at four NYC public middle schools to design and field test learning experiences that instill the lifelong skills, knowledge, and habits of news literate citizens.
