Carla E. Reyes is a mixed-media artist and art educator. She currently teaches visual arts at Growing Up Green Middle School in Long Island City, Queens, where she develops art curricula for 6th-8th grade classes, hosts a weekly afterschool art club, and helps students prepare portfolios for applications to specialized arts high school programs. She has also taught undergraduate and graduate art education courses at CCNY and Queens College. In addition to her work as an art educator, Ms. Reyes is a professional fine artist, creating mixed-media paintings, murals, decorative interiors, and scenic art for theater.

Ms. Reyes says that her experience in the Art Education program enabled her to develop her pedagogical and artistic practices and create long-lasting, meaningful connections with other diverse artist educators. “It continues to be a supportive and inspiring community of life-long learners and creators,” she asserts. She also appreciates her experience in the CCNY School of Education, as it allowed here to connect with educators specializing in different content areas, providing valuable perspectives for working within diverse New York City school environments.

Ms. Reyes recently completed her second master's degree—and M.F.A. in painting from CUNY Lehman College—to take her artistic practice to the next level. “I am interested in continuing as an educator to transition to higher education within the visual arts and art education fields,” she shares. “In addition, I enjoyed working as a student teaching supervisor for CCNY’s Art Education program and would love to explore more coaching and mentoring roles in the future.”

Throughout the years, Ms. Reyes has participated in and developed several grant-funded community art events and projects such as collaborative public murals, children’s art events, and art workshops developed for specific populations. More recently, her fine artwork has focused on women’s issues and themes of motherhood, which has led to collaborations with other artists who are also mothers, working to expose the unique experiences and perspectives of this often marginalized and underrecognized group within the art world.
