Directions for the Student Teaching Application

Review the dates below.
You will be reminded to identify then meet deadlines for your student teaching application, so that the testing and score reporting dates for your NEW YORK STATE TEACHER CERTIFICATION EXAMINATIONS (NYSTCE) will align with the application.

The dates below represent the sequence of requirements. The Office of Clinical Practice recommends that you go to the NYSTCE website, using the links below, to plan testing dates that align with the application.

To be admitted into student teaching you must pass at least one of these exams. Students in mathematics and science must take the CONTENT SPECIALTY TEST (CST) test aligned with their concentration. Dates vary according to discipline, so take care to identify and register for the CST aligned with your program and pending certification and the score-reporting deadline.

CCNY SOE DEADLINE FOR NYSTCE SCORES TO OCP

Fill out the application form.
Student teaching/practicum application and fingerprinting forms are available in the Office of Clinical Practice (OCP) NAC 6/207A. The office is open daily during office hours. You can request these forms as pdfs by emailing Noris Rodriguez at nrodriguez1@ccny.cuny.edu

Meet with your advisor.
Your advisor must review your transcript and generate an approval.  Your program will make a recommendation to the OCP about your eligibility to student teach. Therefore, we strongly suggest that you meet with your advisor early in the process, so you are aware of any further requirements.  When you meet with your advisor, plan your New York State Certification Examination schedule.

Register for and take your tests.
All students must submit proof that they have passed at least one exam to be eligible to student teach, either the CST or EAS. Math and science students must select the CST associated with their program. We recommend that you prepare for, register for, and take at least one exam as early in the process as possible. If you do not pass, you will have to wait three weeks to retake the exam.

Complete fingerprinting process.
All students must undergo a fingerprinting background check before CCNY SOE will provide permission to student teach.  The process is different for students who have been previously fingerprinted; students who have social security numbers; or students who are undocumented.
