Edgar Salazar, Bilingual Childhood Education

Edgar Salazar describes himself as someone with an insatiable curiosity for learning who naturally enjoys sharing what he has learned with others. For this reason, pursuing a degree in education felt like the right path to combine these passions.

When asked why he chose to be a bilingual childhood educator, Edgar said, “I have lived in states where Spanish is not commonly spoken. I stayed connected to my culture and identity through the music I listened to, which helped me feel closer to my identity.” When he returned to New York, the familiar sounds of Latin music playing on stoops in Washington Heights reminded him of how essential the Spanish language is to who he is. “That experience inspired me to channel this connection into something meaningful by helping others through bilingual education.”

At the CCNY School of Education, Edgar has had the privilege to connect with mentors who have profoundly influenced his growth. “They have taught me the value of hard work, organization, time management, and accountability, qualities I now integrate into the classroom,” he explains. “I often say that the School of Education is a place where someone is always willing to help. My advice to others is, go knock on some doors; someone will have an answer.”

Edgar’s goal as a bilingual teacher is to continue learning and growing so he can offer his best to his students. He adds, “I recognize that these goals will evolve each year depending on the unique learners I have the privilege to work with, and I look forward to growing alongside them.”

Outside of school, Edgar is passionate about live music, shows, and performances. He also loves exploring New York City with his son Vincent. “To us, the city is like a giant playground, and we enjoy discovering the countless activities it has to offer,” he shares.
