Requirements

ADMISSIONS CRITERIA

Students applying for admission to the master's degree or advanced certificate programs in the School of Education are required to:

  1. Complete the online application for admission to the particular program.
  2. Submit a non-refundable application fee of $75.00
  3. Possess a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
    Official transcripts of all post-secondary schools attended should be sent electronically to the School of Education Office of Admissions & Student Services at edgradadm@ccny.cuny.edu .  The University reserves the right to request additional academic documents if we are unable to verify the nature or authenticity of your academic documents.
  4. Demonstrate an ability to pursue graduate study successfully.
  5. Possess a grade point average of "B" or above.
  6. Provide three letters of recommendation.
    Three online letters of recommendation on school stationery are required from faculty members or others acquainted with your academic work. The letters of recommendation must be submitted through the online system. You will be required to register your recommenders' e-mail addresses, in turn, they will each receive an e-mail with directions on how to proceed. Please note that all electronic recommendations must be received within one week after the application deadline.
  7. Complete an in person written essay and interview.

INTERVIEWS/ON-SITE ESSAYS

Interview/on-site essays are scheduled for prospective candidates with a fully completed application. Applicants are contacted by individual programs via email or phone to schedule the sessions.
In general, applicants who meet the above criteria can expect to be invited to interview within a three-week window following the close of the application deadline.

MATRICULATION STATUS

Full matriculation is open to graduates of colleges of recognized standing who are qualified to undertake graduate study by reason of previous preparation in both subject matter and professional fields as listed under the several program specializations. Candidates are expected to meet acceptable standards in respect to academic record, character and health.

Non-Degree Applicants

The School of Education Graduate Division will accept non-degree students who seek professional growth. Taking one or a series of courses to improve teaching skills and to keep up with new developments in the candidates' area of teaching is encouraged by the College.
The School of Education may also allow degree and/or certification seeking candidates to take up to nine credits as non–degree students. If such candidates are formally accepted, the program director will decide whether any of the credits taken as a non–degree student may be applied toward the program requirements.

  1. Those who wish to attend as non–degree students may only be admitted to courses for which they are qualified. Such candidates must file online for admission as a non–degree student.
  2. Candidates must also present student copies of transcripts or other credentials proving graduation from an accredited institution at that time.
  3. Advisors in each of the several teaching and service fields are available for consultation at registration and during the regular semesters.
  4. Non-degree students must follow the regular rules for registration and course requirements, including prerequisites.

FAQs

What are the application requirements to apply for the School of Education (SoE)?
Requirements are:

  • Completed online application
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Official transcripts from all colleges applicant has attended electronically delivered to edgradadm@ccny.cuny.edu
  • Application fee of $75.00
  • Applicants to programs in Literacy and Educational Leadership must already hold initial certification. For either program, kindly include a copy of your NYSED issued certificate with your application materials.

What is the minimum GPA to be considered for the SOE graduate program?
Minimum GPA required is 3.0 or “B” average

How many years do students usually take to finish the graduate program?
That depends on the program and how many courses you choose to take during the semesters. However, two years is typical.

What if I need to take Education Pre-requisite Courses?
Your advisor will help you plan for these courses.

What if I need courses before I start the program? Should I complete those courses before applying to the program?
Check with your advisor before registering for these courses.

What happens once my application is submitted?
The SOE graduate degree processors begin to compile your supplemental materials in preparation for faculty review after the deadline date and will contact you by email if there are any missing materials.

When are interviews/on-site essays scheduled?
Interviews and on-site essays are scheduled (approximately) within a  three-week window, following the close of the application deadline. The SOE program office will send out email communiques or phone calls to schedule interviews.
