Marty RosenmanProfessor Martin Rosenman is completing his 16th year at The City College School of Education. He received his bachelor’s degree in biology and chemistry from Hunter College and later received two master’s degrees in science education from The City College of New York. In addition to his classroom experience, he served as Science Department Coordinator for two semesters, Dean of Students Coordinator, and was involved in curriculum writing and facilitated workshops for new teachers for the Manhattan Superintendent’s Office.

After retiring from the New York City Department of Education in 2003, he was involved in the New Teacher Induction Program mentoring beginning teachers in several high schools in the city. He was also the Assistant Director and Coordinator of School Visits for the Center of International Teacher Training at the College of Mount Saint Vincent, position that gave him the opportunity to work with groups of educators from Shenzhen, China, for many years. The City College School of Education was one of their frequent stops to speak with faculty, staff, and students while visiting schools in the New York area.

Marty, as we affectionally call him, shared that “after teaching high school biology and science for 34 years in New York City schools, working at The City College School of Education has been a high point for me. At this point in my second career, my focus is to keep on the same path, continue to hone my teaching skills, keep up-to-date with all of the changes taking place in education, and learn from the students I teach.” He appreciates returning to the college where he spent many years as a graduate student and getting to know and work with many excellent faculty and staff in the School of Education.

Professor Rosenman was involved in two academies housed in the School of Education: the CUNY Teacher Academy at CCNY (2006-2012) and the Noyce Teacher Academy (2013-2018). In both programs, students were given extensive fieldwork experience, met weekly, visited various education sites, and had guest speakers from our partner schools. He finds the experience of seeing aspiring teachers he taught progress to become tenured teachers and school leaders and continue to hear from them very rewarding.

For Professor Rosenman, preparing teachers is about sharing his teaching experience and giving aspiring and newer teachers the necessary tools, resources, and support to become effective career educators and lifelong learners. He has enjoyed supervising student teachers since 2010 and currently teaches the seminar for secondary student teachers.
