Peter GoodmanPeter Goodman attended The City College as an undergraduate student and graduated with a major in history and a minor in education in 1961. After he earned his master’s in history from Indiana University in 1963, he taught for 33 years at James Madison High School, where he worked part-time for the teachers’ union. “It was the best job in the world,” he said. “I really loved it because I represented the teachers in the school district, and I was involved in school board elections in dealing with the school board, with the superintendent.”

After he retired in 1997, Mr. Goodman became a consultant and worked for New Visions for Public Schools. “I worked a lot with small high schools on the design and support of all high schools, so I became very interested in small schools and how they are different because I had taught in a school with 4,000 kids,” he said.

Because of Mr. Goodman’s work and experience in the field of education, it was suggested that he write a blog. “I did not know what that was,” he said. Nonetheless, he eventually started writing a blog called Ed in the Apple: The intersection of education and politics. Shortly thereafter, he began attending the Board of Regents meetings in Albany and writing about it in his blog. “I sort of became, I guess you would call it, a citizen lobbyist.”

Mr. Goodman is the current President of the Education Alumni Group. This is a very active group of The City College of New York Alumni Association; it runs a number of activities every year, including a February 17, 2022 event on dealing with Covid-19 in the classroom with Dr. Frank Corigliano as guest. Mr. Goodman also writes a newsletter three times a year for the Education Alumni Group titled the “CCNY Education Alumni Reporter.”

Learning, according to Mr. Goodman, is a lifetime experience. We thank him for allowing us to learn from him.
