Teresa Rivera began working as a CUNY Office Assistant in the School of Education in 2005, and was immediately immersed in what she describes as the constant activity of admissions and student services in the School of Education. In 2006, she began assisting students with everything from enrollment to graduation and placements. She currently works in the Office of Admissions and Student Services counseling prospective students, assisting undergraduates with program-completion reviews and registration, and outreaching to other divisions.
In addition to supporting undergraduate students, she recruits and onboards graduate students. She is the main counselor for graduate admissions in the School of Education. In her years at the school, she has seen students “grow up and do well in their careers and excel in and out of school.” Being at The City College School of Education has allowed her to see teachers from a new perspective and develop a new appreciation for what they do with their own students, parents, colleagues, and the community.
Ms. Rivera is instrumental in making the School of Education Office of Admissions and Students Services a safe space for students who need support outside the classroom. “Students can come here for personal support with any personal issues,” she said. “We become the liaisons for students.” Ms. Rivera finds it satisfying to know that she is able to be here for students. The rapport she builds with them is important to her.
An alumna of The City College (B.A. in Sociology, 2017), Ms. Rivera wants to do more in the area of outreach to different programs and different communities. In particular, she would like to attract even more students from diverse communities and help build programs such as secondary mathematics education and secondary science education.
On behalf of students, staff, and faculty, thank you for everything you do!
