The City College of New York participates in Open House New York (OHNY) Weekend on Saturday, October 19th, with two venues reflecting its extraordinary history as well as its continuing prominence in cutting-edge scholarship and design.

OHNY Weekend is a celebration of an extraordinary city and its architecture, offering unparalleled access to important spaces.  City College opens the Great Hall, a jewel within architect George B. Post's grand design of the landmarked Neo-Gothic campus.  Step inside the soaring space--one of the largest rooms in all of New York City--and learn about its history and architecture from the chief architect guiding its restoration, Carl Stein.  Winner of the Lucy G. Moses Preservation Award, The Great Hall (located within the main building, Shepard Hall) will be open to the public from the hours of 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., and tours will be given by Architect Carl Stein at 10, 11, 12, and 1.   Extend your campus visit to CCNY Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture's Solar RoofPod, a student-designed micro-dwelling, with tours led by Professor Christian Volkmann at 10:15 and at 11:15 a.m.. The RoofPod and Harlem Garden for Urban Food will be open from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

In 1907, City College moved to its breathtaking Neo-Gothic campus designed by George Browne Post, the architect of the Stock Exchange.  Built atop what was being called an acropolis, in the heart of Harlem and Hamilton Heights, the buildings were formed from the Manhattan schist bedrock on which they perch.  White terra cotta ornament and an array of delightful grotesques reflecting the academic disciplines originally housed within are hallmarks of the campus that remains a significant tribute to public higher education.  Today, those buildings are landmarked, and the campus has expanded to 36 tree-lined acres, including state-of-the art science buildings.  Within the iconic Shepard Hall is CCNY’s Great Hall, a jewel of Post’s grand design built in the tradition of the great European university, and one of the largest rooms in all of New York City.

Tours of the Great Hall will be offered at 10 a.m., 11, 12, and 1 p.m..  Shepard Hall entrance is located at Convent Avenue and West 139th Street.

Tours of the Solar RoofPod and Harlem Garden for Urban Food will be offered at 10:15 and 11:15 a.m.   Spitzer School of Architecture entrance is located at Convent Avenue and West 135th Street.

Additional tours of the City College campus will be available.
