Sabrina A. Mendez-Escobar is an Associate Dean of Instruction at City Colleges of Chicago-Harry S. Truman College with instructional tenure in Human Development and Education. She is also a Ph.D. candidate in Child Development at the Erikson Institute. As a CUNY DSI Research Fellow, Mendez-Escobar will advance her research ethnic-racial socialization practices of Dominican mothers in the United States. Her work examines parental practices of Dominican mothers of young children aimed at teaching their children what it means to be Dominican with a focus on the role of sociohistorical context. In line with CUNY DSI’s thinking that research focusing on specific ethnic-racial groups yields more precise and accurate information, Mendez-Escobar contends that extant ethno-racial socialization literature could be expanded and enriched with research examining particular Latino subgroups.
