Athena Devlin, Director of the Publishing Certificate Program
The Publishing Certificate Program (PCP) has formed a new and exciting partnership with the nonprofit Inkluded, which shares the PCP mission to actively “train and place young people from underrepresented groups into their first publishing jobs.” Inkluded will work with the director of the PCP to bring free events on the publishing industry to both PCP students and graduate students in English, including one talk on publishing from the point of view of creative writers designed for CCNY’s MFA and English MA graduate students. Upcoming talks will take place at Hachette and Macmillan.
In addition, Inkluded has designed an internship program specifically for our PCP students, who will be paid through a Mellon Foundation Grant via CCNY’s Humanities Internships program. The PCP has joined forces with Humanities Internships to find paid internships for PCP students in other nonprofits as well, including PEN America and the Centro Primo Levi. A huge shoutout to Humanities Internship director Marisa Hollywood for all her help!
Along with applying to spring internships, a record number of PCP students are working with mentors at Viking Penguin in a program that goes from November to April. The mentorship program matches PCP students with people in the industry working in departments that students hope to enter. Students have been paired with editors, editorial assistants, publicists, marketing teams, art and design directors, production editors, and (for one lucky student) Viking’s President and Publisher Brian Tart.
Publishing Certificate Program courses are open to registration by undergraduate, graduate, and continuing education students from all majors who want to learn more about the book publishing business. Registration is available via CUNYFirst. To inquire about registration for these courses and/or enrollment in the Publishing Certificate Program, contact the PCP’s director, Athena Devlin via email ( adevlin@ccny.cuny.edu ). The PCP’s spring 2026 course offerings include Introduction to Publishing, The Editorial Process, and Books for Young Readers.
