It is my pleasure to announce and welcome Dr. Marc Ostfield as the new Dean of the Colin Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership. Dr. Ostfield was chosen after a nationwide search that began last spring and culminated with the campus visits of four accomplished finalists early in the Fall semester.
Dr. Ostfield spent the past 23 years in the U.S. Department of State, most recently serving as the U.S. Ambassador to Paraguay from 2022 to 2025. He also led the Foreign Service Institute, the State Department’s diplomatic training academy, from 2013-2018, responsible for… Read More »
Dear Members of the Campus Community,
By now, many of you will have heard about a recent interfaith dialogue program that was disrupted when one of the panelists, an imam, publicly refused to share the panel with the another guest speaker, calling him a “Zionist” and leading Muslim students in a walkout.
Immediately after the event, we began receiving complaints in our Chief Diversity Office alleging antisemitism and violent threats which are now being investigated to see whether the actions violated our discrimination or harassment policies. Investigations of this nature are… Read More »
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
Chicago has its first major snowstorm as I write, and we’re looking at a freeze warning over the next few days - so I know, like me, your thoughts now turn to karaoke. I hope you’re prepared to pick a song, share some food, and spend a little holiday time together as colleagues.
We’ll meet on December 4th, at 4 pm in Shepard 350. You don’t have to sing, of course, but broad and earnest participation - determinedly agnostic as to levels of talent or training, buoyed up by robust encouragement - has been the order of the day so far, and I know the… Read More »

Dear Campus Community,
With the recent announcement of the new Executive Order related to the H-1B visa status, we know that there is a tremendous amount of concern and uncertainty. I would like to take this time to share some updates from both CUNY Central and The CUNY Research Foundation and the impact to our campus community:
The Proclamation does not apply to:
Individuals who are already in the United States in a valid H-1B status;
Beneficiaries with previously approved petitions or valid H-1B visas issued prior to the effective date; or
Petitions filed before… Read More »
Dear Campus Community,
As many of you may now have heard, we lost a true CCNY institution last week. Brett Silverstein passed away in his home after decades of service to the college, to his department and colleagues, to countless students and to the discipline. His passing leaves a tremendous hole in the college, and we mourn his passing.
Brett served for years as the chair of the psychology department and moved from that position to assume the deanship of the division of social science in the early 2000’s. He was ambitious for the departments under his care but… Read More »

Dear Campus Community,
The City College of New York mourns the passing of Dr. Gregory H. Williams, scholar, award-winning author and 11th President of The City College of New York. Under his leadership, from 2001 to 2009, CCNY gained national recognition. His many accomplishments included opening the first residence hall built for a CUNY campus, and the completion of a new home for the Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture. In addition, Dr. Williams led the first capital campaign in CCNY history then, raising more than $310 million during his tenure. Major gifts… Read More »
