This is the first event in a three-part symposia series that will feature research and reflections on anti-blackness and state power

In August 2026, the Critical Geographies of Jamaica Working Group submitted an open letter to the Government of Jamaica and the Leader of the Opposition outlining concerns about the persistence of anti-Blackness shaping the lives of marginalized Jamaicans. Since its release, the letter has gained more than one hundred signatures and has ignited converation on the current state of social and political life in Jamaica.

This symposium represents the next step in a broader series of actions aimed at fostering dialogue and more just outcomes for everyday Jamaicans. The event will feature scholars whose research speaks directly to questions of Black life, state power, climate vulnerability, policing, inequality, and social justice. Attendees will have opportunities to respond, ask questions, and contribute their own perspectives on the issues raised throughout the symposium.
