Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences offers a flexible education customized for working adults and transfer students and provides them with a framework that allows them to connect their learning in the classroom in ways that are relevant to the workplace and the world. The majority of courses are 4 credits and meet once per week in the evenings and during the day on Saturdays. The Division also sponsors research and conferences that reflect its interdisciplinary approach to teaching and learning, including the Patai Lecture Series, the Human rights forum, and the Rights Talk Podcast.

M. A. in the Study of the Americas

The program addresses questions and concepts about the Americas as it focuses on topics such as: race, migration and immigration, popular culture, politics, gender, and human rights.  It provides a collaborative space within which students may develop their intellectual engagement, applying diverse and myriad disciplinary approaches to investigate the intersections  among education, policy, government, society, history, culture, and the arts.

A rigorous, well-defined curriculum grounds students in an interdisciplinary perspective, while allowing them to explore more individual interests. Our 30-credit program enables students, with approval, to take up to three 3-credit courses as an Independent Study, at another division within the City College, or at another CUNY campus; or even benefit from the study abroad programs whose content areas complement those of the MA in the Study of the Americas.

The Divisional Committee on Inclusive Excellence

The Divisional Committee on Inclusive Excellence

The Department of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences at the City College Center for Worker Education (CWE) works in conjunction with the President’s Council on Inclusive Excellence to incorporate “the full diversity of backgrounds, traditions, and experience of faculty staff, and students in realizing the goal of an inclusive community that values excellence in scholarship, creative arts, teaching and learning and student development.” These aims are given special attention due to CWE’s historic mission of establishing relationships with labor unions, community-based organizations, city agencies, and employers in both the non-profit and private sectors who share this educational mission. CWE’s Committee on Inclusive Excellence also seeks to implement the President’s mission to “encourage inclusiveness in hiring: fairness in faculty retention, tenure, and promotion; and provision of equal opportunity for all faculty and staff to use, on their merits, to leadership positions.”
