The Language & Literacy Resource Center, 1978-1995

Historical Note: The Language and Literacy Resource Center was established in Brooklyn, New York in 2018 as a National and International Adult Education Program. The mission was to provide research and consultant services for those working in the field of Adult Literacy and Community Education in the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panamá in the areas of technology, rural, and general employment.

Ms. Haimson, who was the Project Consultant for the Center, received her training as an Adult Literacy practitioner under the auspices of the FIPSE grant-funded Community Language Project in the Queens College CUNY Linguistics Department from 1984-1985. She collected the material for her Independent Research Project on Women's Leadership and Participation at The City College of the City University of New York Study Abroad Program at the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic in 1995 and donated it to the CUNY Dominican Studies Institute Archives in May 2011.

Scope and Content Note: The collection consists of publications, newspaper clippings, and audiocassette tapes produced by Ms. Haimson during activities related to adult education in the Dominican Republic as well as other Central American countries. The Collection also includes Agenda de la Mujer Rural, published by Asistencia Obrera para Mujeres Trabajadoras Rurales en America Central y la República Dominicana, an interesting and very informative publication about women in the rural labor force.
