De Welfare no Vive Nadie: Dominican Women in New York

De Welfare no Vive Nadie: Dominican Women in New York. Produced by Nancy López and Ginetta Candelario. New York, 1994. English. Color; 25 minutes. VHS 10.

This documentary features interviews with several poor Dominican women who became welfare recipients due to unemployment and dire poverty in New York City. The makers of this video examine the causes behind the discriminatory attacks on welfare recipients by politicians and provide data on poverty levels amongst the Dominican community. The aim of the documentary, aired on CUNY TV in 1997, is to demystify stereotypes about women of color on public assistance and explain the root causes of welfare dependency.
