Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about CUNY DSI Research Fellowships

How do I know if I have been awarded a research fellowship?

CUNY DSI will email acceptance letters to all fellowship awardees on May 15, 2023. Applicants not selected will also be promptly notified via email.

When will I receive the award money?

First payment equal to half of the total award will be processed once the awardee has met, either in person or via videoconference, with Dr. Hernández. Awardees must arrange this meeting within one (1) week of accepting the fellowship. Once CUNY DSI submits paperwork for payment, the process will take approximately 4 to 6 weeks for payment to be issued. For CUNY employees, the process will take several months.  As per CUNY’s regulations, payments to CUNY Faculty/Staff require several levels of approval, including authorization from the City University of New York’s Chancellor.

Remaining payment of the total award will be processed once 80% of the research has been completed and a date for completion of final delivery has been set by the awardee.

All publications, presentations, and creative works based on activities conducted during the fellowship must acknowledge CUNY DSI or NSA support.

How do I apply for a grant if I am abroad?

All candidates must submit applications via online, irrespective of where you are at the time of submission. However, the closing of the application link will follow Eastern Standard Time for everyone both in the United States and abroad. Hence, we urge you to be aware of time differences.

Will CUNY DSI sponsor my visa?

No. If you are not authorized to travel to the U.S., you should consult with your home institution or country about obtaining a visa to travel to the U.S.

Do you have any suggestions for housing in New York City when I visit CUNY DSI?

CUNY DSI does not provide a list of housing options. We strongly suggest you plan your stay in NYC accordingly, utilizing the variety of housing information available online.

Will CUNY DSI make a public announcement of awardees?

Yes. CUNY DSI will announce the fellowship winners through a variety of media outlets, including the CUNY DSI portal. Some of the publicity will include your photo. Therefore, we will require a professional headshot upon your acceptance of the fellowship.

Can I re-apply for this Research Fellowship?

Yes. Winners of CUNY DSI Research Awards may re-apply three full years after receiving an award from CUNY DSI. All others may re-apply the following year.

Can I submit my application in Spanish?
