In commemoration of having awarded our 100th master's degree last May, the staff and faculty decided to offer a glimpse of how far the MPA program has come. The results are summarized in the figure to the right.  From a rocky start, together we have created a program that boasts graduates who work at the White House, the Governor's Office of Storm Recovery, the Rockefeller Foundation, the Harlem Children's Zone, and the City University of New York. They support public service ranging from health and education, to law enforcement and transportation. It took a great deal of… Read More »

At a briefing held October 17th at the City College of New York, Jason Furman, President Obama’s Chief Economic Adviser, reported that the incomes of average Americans rose by 5.2 percent in 2015. “That is the largest growth in income since the 1960s,” he said.  Dr. Furman went on to outline some of the challenges the next administration will face, including the continuing disparities in wealth and incomes. Dr. Furman, appointed by President Obama in 2013, spoke to an overflow crowd of students, faculty, and staff in City College’s Shepard Hall. The event was hosted by the… Read More »

MPA students Abubakar Usman (far left) and Asshur Cunningham (far right) helped coordinate a White House briefing on criminal justice and disability reform as part of their summer internships in Washington, DC.  Both are interning with the National Disability Rights Network, an organization in Washington that advocates on behalf of the rights of the disabled. After finding the courage to endure through various health issues, Preeya Saikia finished at the top of her class. For Preeya Saikia, who works at The White House, Office of Management and Budget, as a Confidential Assistant, a strong value system is a key component to her success in public service.“The recent passing of Harper Lee took me back to the first time I read To Kill a Mockingbird at the age of 11,” she says. “I still read it. In fact, I read it every year since I first met Atticus Finch. I learn new things about Atticus every year, but something that always moves me,… Read More »

He graduated in 2004 from Hunter College, where he managed the dance company and majored in dance and Latin American Studies.  He finished his MPA degree in 2014 and now manages programs at the West Harlem Development Corporation (WHDC).  Last week, Ariel reflected on his dance, his career, and his experience in the Master’s program in Public Administration (MPA) here at City College. "This is not just my degree; it is my husband's degree and my children's degree."   When Toni Alexander tells people her children's ages, she is always met with disbelief: “But you look so young!” Toni and her husband, Reggie, have three children: Jaydon (16), Kaelyn (12), and Kaedon (5). With only months left until graduation, she reflects here on the challenges of being a mom and a graduate student. She admits it wasn’t easy, “you struggle, daily.” “When you’re worrying about the program,” she continues, “I’m worrying about my kids. It’s an added stress.” How did she hold… Read More »

(It hadn’t yet become part of the Colin Powell School.) He grew up in the Harlem projects, with just his mom and siblings. “I got in lots of trouble,” he says, “including run-ins with law enforcement.”  He is now a chief of operations for Hunt Guillot and Associates, working on storm recovery efforts for the New York Governor’s Office. He is the proud father of a nineteen-month-old… Read More »
