In commemoration of having awarded our 100th master's degree last May, the staff and faculty decided to offer a glimpse of how far the MPA program has come. The results are summarized in the figure to the right.

At a briefing held October 17th at the City College of New York, Jason Furman, President Obama’s Chief Economic Adviser, reported that the incomes of average Americans rose by 5.2 percent in 2015. “That is the largest growth in income since the 1960s,” he said. Dr. Furman went on to outline some of the challenges the next administration will face, including the continuing disparities in wealth and incomes.

MPA students Abubakar Usman (far left) and Asshur Cunningham (far right) helped coordinate a White House briefing on criminal justice and disability reform as part of their summer internships in Washington, DC. Both are interning with the National Disability Rights Network, an organization in Washington that advocates on behalf of the rights of the disabled. Students received stipends and housing support while interning in the US capitol.

Ariel Quinones has been dancing since age twelve. He graduated in 2004 from Hunter College, where he managed the dance company and majored in dance and Latin American Studies. He finished his MPA degree in 2014 and now manages programs at the West Harlem Development Corporation (WHDC). When Toni Alexander tells people her children's ages, she is always met with disbelief: “But you look so young!” Toni and her husband, Reggie, have three children: Jaydon (16), Kaelyn (12), and Kaedon (5). With only months left until graduation, she reflects here on the challenges of being a mom and a graduate student.

Joseph Alston was the first graduate of City College’s Master’s Program in Public Administration back in 2010. (It hadn’t yet become part of the Colin Powell School.) He grew up in the Harlem projects, with just his mom and siblings. “I got in lots of trouble,” he says, “including run-ins with law enforcement.”

The Rangel Center, together with the Master's Program in Public Administration and the Zahn Innovation Center, sponsored a workshop on performance measurement in nonprofit organizations. The program was part of a series designed to share campus expertise and connections with students and the community at large. The workshop featured a panel of experts moderated by Professor George Mitchell. The event was broadcast online.
