Abstract:  A firm grasp of coastal and ocean scientific and engineering principles is required to support increasing activities associated with offshore operations and coastal development.  Proper application of appropriate numerical models helps optimize design, select engineering alternatives to minimize environmental impacts, and manage present and future risk.  Models are useful tools, but require strong knowledge of supporting theory and sound professional judgement to interpret and best utilize model outputs.  Two practical case studies will be reviewed:  1) Analysis of sediment transport associated with laying a power cable for a proposed offshore wind-powered electric generation facility; and 2) Estimation of future community flood risk associated with rising sea level and increasing storm intensity.  Focus will be on the reasons why the analyses are required, and how stakeholders use the information to make decisions.

Biography:  Bob Hamilton is President and Coastal Engineer at Woods Hole Group, Inc., a company focused on applying latest technologies to solve customer problems (www.woodsholegroup.com).  He received a BSCE in Civil Engineering from Lehigh University and a MCE from Center for Applied Coastal Research at the University of Delaware.  He has experience supporting government agencies from local through federal levels, including NOAA and Army Corps, offshore energy companies (traditional oil & gas and renewables), as well as private industry and land owners.  His experience includes shore protection, dredging, habitat restoration, field data collection, and a range of planning and engineering studies and environmental impact assessments.  His interest in Coastal Engineering was inspired by passion for ocean waves.
