MFA for CUNY hosted Microsoft Apps Starts July 8 (Tomorrow)

Office of Information Technology (OIT)

Dear City College Community,

This is a reminder that starting tomorrow, Tuesday, July 8, 2025Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) will be enable for all Microsoft 365 apps accessed through the CUNY-provided license (e.g., Word, Excel, Teams, OneDrive, etc.) using your CUNY Login ID (e.g.,  firstname.lastname##@login.cuny.edu ).

To clarify, this change does not affect your City College email (@ccny.cuny.edu), which is hosted separately and already protected by MFA.

You may be wondering how this affects you, especially if you’re already using MFA for email. Here are the key differences:

  • City College Email – No Change
MFA remains in place for your @ccny.cuny.edu account. No action is needed.
  • CUNY Microsoft Apps – New MFA requirement
Beginning July 8, MFA will be required when accessing Microsoft 365 apps through your @login.cuny.edu account.

After this update, you will see two separate accounts in your Microsoft Authenticator app:

  • @ccny.cuny.edu – for your City College email
  • @login.cuny.edu – for your CUNY-provided Microsoft apps

This is expected behavior and represents two distinct systems now both protected by MFA.

We encourage everyone to enroll in MFA as soon as possible. Instructions can be found in the CUNY IT Help Knowledge Base:
Where do I find instructions on setting up Microsoft Multi-factor Authentication?

Thank you for your cooperation in helping protect our digital environment.
