Course Description
The 320-hour Hybrid Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) is designed to prepare students to work as multi-skilled allied health professionals capable of performing both administrative and clinical procedures in a variety of healthcare settings as medical assistants. The program is divided into two components: Administrative and Clinical. Students must successfully complete both sections to graduate.
A foundational understanding of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology is beneficial; however, introductory instruction may be provided as part of the course. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and possess the physical capability to carry out clinical responsibilities, including patient care, phlebotomy, and medication administration. These prerequisites help ensure that students are well prepared to meet the demands of a clinical medical assisting role.
Students are required to demonstrate awareness of and full compliance with all established safety practices and health protocols, as in-person skills instruction includes venipuncture techniques using training arms and simulation. Applicants must complete and sign consent forms acknowledging their ability to voluntarily participate in blood draws or to bring a volunteer to class for this purpose.
Course Outline
Medical Terminology/ Anatomy and Physiology (30 hours)
This course presents a study of basic medical terminology. Included in this content are the prefixes, suffixes, word roots, combining forms, special endings, plural forms, abbreviations, and symbols for practical use. A programmed learning, word building system will be used to learn word parts that are used to construct or analyze new terms. This will provide the opportunity to decipher unfamiliar terms and check their spelling. Emphasis is placed on spelling, definition, usage and pronunciation. Abbreviations will be introduced as related terms are presented. This course focuses on diseases that are frequently diagnosed and treated in the medical office setting. Basic anatomy and physiology, pathology, drug highlights, diagnostic and laboratory tests and pharmacology will also be discussed.
The Clinical Medical Assistant (160 hours)
The role and function of the professional in the clinical laboratory will be introduced. Topics include Electrocardiogram, Phlebotomy and Clinical Procedures. This covers safety in the laboratory, CLIA government regulations and quality assurance, and microscopic procedures and concepts. Students will perform procedures in the different departments of the laboratory including specimen collection and performance of CLIA ‘88 low and moderate complexity testing. Students will demonstrate competency in the wide variety of specimen techniques used to collect, process, and test specimens, as well as in calculation of patient heart rate from the EKG tracing and development in the performance of a variety of blood collection methods using proper techniques and universal precautions. Note: Students must perform a minimum of 20 successful venipunctures and 20 successful EKG monitoring.
Medical Assisting: General Discipline and Office Administration (90 hours)
The role and function of the medical assistant will be reviewed. This course focuses on the basic concepts of professional practice of medicine and the scope of practice of the medical assistant. Students will to able to discuss personal and professional characteristics, as well as legal and ethical standards for medical assistants, be able to explore professional and personal therapeutic communication, and address time management and goal setting. Topics include: The Healthcare Industry, Medical Assisting Profession, Professional Behavior in the Workplace, Interpersonal Skills and Human Behavior, Medicine and Ethics. This course explores the duties of a medical administrative assistant in any healthcare facility. It emphasizes adhering to the office policies and procedures in assembling medical records and patient intake in accordance to the needs and guidelines of the office. Topics are Computer Concepts, Telephone Techniques, Scheduling Appointments, Patient Reception and Processing, Office Environment and Daily Operations, Written Communications and Mail Processing, Basics of Health Insurance, Insurance Health Claim Form, ICD-10-CM Coding, CPT Coding.
Electronic Health Record/EHR (30 hours)
This course concentrates on maintaining integrity and protecting the privacy and security of patient information when using an electronic healthcare software program. It covers the usage and management of health information and electronic health records from ambulatory, long term, home health, specialty, population health, and personal health that encompass the continuum of care. Topics are: Basic components of a complete medical record, entering demographic and insurance information; Charting: progress notes, vital signs, medical histories, diagnoses, medications, immunization dates, allergies, radiology images, lab and test results. Professional Training and Assistance (10 hours)
Job readiness workshops and test preparation sessions aim to prepare MA students for expected work in the medical field. It will include resume preparations, interview techniques, and other professional seminars to provide real-world guidance for the workplace with emphasis on productivity and collaborative interaction.

Eligibility Requirements
To enroll, applicants must:
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Hold a high school diploma or equivalent
- CPS is a workforce training program; you must be able work legally in the U.S.
Required Language and Computer and Digital Competency:
English Language Proficiency: This course involves extensive use of medical terminology and complex concepts. Students must be able to communicate effectively in English and demonstrate the ability to understand and follow both written materials and live lectures presented in English.
Computer, Digital and Online Proficiency: As this is an online course, students must possess basic computer literacy and be comfortable using various digital tools and platforms. Participants should be able to navigate the internet, access video conferencing applications such as Zoom or Brightspace and work with common file types and software, including Microsoft Word, PDF files, and PowerPoint.
- Students should also be able to upload and download files, open and close applications, read online documents, manage multiple open windows, access online textbooks, and use search engines effectively. The ability to create online accounts, access online services, and utilize multimedia tools within computer applications is required.
- Students must be capable of reading and interpreting reference materials, performing basic numerical analysis, and learning new computer applications efficiently. The course requires the ability to use multiple software programs simultaneously in an online learning environment.
Career Outlook
According to the US Department of Labor outlook handbook, the employment of medical assistants is expected to grow 23 percent from 2018 to 2028, much faster than the average for all occupations. MA job postings increased at least 9% each year. The growth of the aging baby-boom population will continue to increase demand for preventive medical services, which are often provided by physicians. As a result, physicians will hire more assistants to perform routine administrative and clinical duties, allowing the physicians to see more patients.
