Security Guard Certification

The City College of New York, a NYS DCJS certified security guard training school, offers the following NYS mandated security training courses.

All courses are taught by certified instructors.

All students must be 18 years of age or older.

COURSES:

8-Hour Pre-Assignment Training for Security Guards

This is an 8 hour course required by New York State as the first step in obtaining a security guard registration card from the New York State Department of State.

Topics covered in this course include:

  • the role of the security guard
  • legal powers and limitations
  • emergency situations
  • communications and public relations
  • access control
  • ethics and conduct

The passing of an examination is required for successful completion of this course.

16-Hour On-the-Job Training for Security Guards

This is a 16 hour course that must be completed within 90 days of employment as a security guard. 

Topics covered in this course include:

  • the role of the security guard
  • legal powers and limitations
  • emergency situations
  • communications and public relations
  • access control
  • ethics and conduct
  • incident command system
  • terrorism

The passing of an examination is required for successful completion of this course.

8-Hour Annual In-Service

This 8-hour course is developed by the security guard training school and must be completed to maintain and renew a security guard registration card. 

The eight-hour annual in-service course is comprised of 8 hours of instruction that may include 2 hours of security related elective topics.

A security guard must complete two annual in-service courses in their two-year registration period.
