Online Medical Billing and Coding Specialist (CBCS): Part 1-2

CPS currently offers the first two courses in the four-course Microcredential in Medical Billing and Coding, providing a strong foundation and the certification preparation needed to launch your career.

Course Description

This program is divided into two parts.
Part I covers Medical Terminology, Anatomy and Physiology, and the fundamentals of Medical Coding. Part II focuses on Medical Billing, health insurance claims processing, legal and ethical responsibilities in healthcare, and preparation for the NHA certification exam.

 

Course Objectives

This program will prepare students to:

  1. Understand the anatomy and physiology of major body systems.
  2. Break down and analyze medical terminology for meaning and relevance to medical records.
  3. Use word parts and root structures to understand complex medical terms.
  4. Explain the function and purpose of each major body system.
  5. Interpret medical records using knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.
  6. Identify the purpose and structure of ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS Level II coding manuals.
  7. Use coding manuals to accurately select codes for diagnoses, procedures, and supplies.
  8. Read and interpret medical records and translate information into appropriate codes.
  9. Understand key coding guidelines.
  10. Apply coding guidelines to ensure accurate, compliant coding.

Online Billing & Coding I

30 Sessions | $995 | Online Synchronous
Build the core knowledge needed to enter the billing and coding field. This course introduces you to:

  • Medical terminology, technology, anatomy, and physiology
  • The fundamentals of medical coding
  • How insurance claims are prepared, submitted, and followed up
  • The role of billing and coding specialists within healthcare organizations

You’ll leave Part 1 with a solid foundation and hands-on practice — fully prepared for Billing & Coding II.
This course is a prerequisite for Part 2.

Online Billing & Coding II

28 Sessions | $1,280 | Online Synchronous
Part 2 takes your training further with advanced skills that support real-world healthcare operations. You’ll learn:

  • Revenue Cycle Management
  • Health insurance procedures and payer requirements
  • Compliance standards, and legal and ethical responsibilities
  • Advanced billing and coding techniques
  • Full preparation for the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) Certified Billing & Coding Specialist (CBCS) exam

By the end of this course, you'll be ready to pursue certification and enter the workforce with confidence.

Required Language and Computer & Digital Competency

English Language Proficiency
Students must be able to communicate effectively in English. This course includes extensive medical terminology and complex concepts, so learners should be able to understand and follow written materials, assignments, and live lectures presented in English.

Computer, Digital, and Online Proficiency
Because this is a fully online course, students are expected to have basic computer literacy and be comfortable using digital tools and platforms. Participants should be able to:

  • Navigate the internet and use search engines
  • Access and use video conferencing platforms (Zoom, Google Meet)
  • Work with common file types (Word, PDF, PowerPoint)
  • Upload and download files
  • Open and close applications and manage multiple windows
  • Read online documents and access online textbooks
  • Create online accounts and use web-based services
  • Use multimedia tools within computer applications

Students must also be able to read and interpret reference materials, perform basic numerical analysis, and learn new software efficiently. Coursework requires the ability to use multiple applications at the same time in an online learning environment.

Students are responsible for purchasing their own books and subscriptions.

Important Notes:

  • Do NOT purchase the e-book–only subscription. Students must purchase MindTap Unlimited.
  • A 4-month subscription is required for Part I.
  • A 1-year subscription is recommended because the same access will be used throughout Parts I–IV of the full microcredential program.

2. Medical Coding Manuals

These manuals are essential for learning medical coding and are required for Parts I and II. They must also be brought to the certification exams associated with Parts III and IV. Manuals may be purchased individually or at a reduced bundle cost using the provided link.

Microcredential - Pathway Overview

You can take all four courses individually as part of Medical Billing & Coding Microcredential.

1. Online Billing & Coding I 

Start with the essentials. You’ll learn medical terminology, anatomy and physiology basics, and an introduction to medical coding — plus guided practice in preparing and submitting insurance claims.
This course is a prerequisite for Part 2. No certificate is issued at this level.
