Black History Month
A Note from Dean Juan Carlos Mercado
Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff,
In recognition of Black History Month, I write to acknowledge and celebrate the profound contributions of Black individuals to our society, culture, and shared history, and to reaffirm our commitment to building a more inclusive and equitable future.
Black History Month is not simply about looking back; it is about understanding the present and shaping the future. It is a time to recognize the struggles, resilience, and triumphs of Black Americans and to honor the enduring impact of their contributions in fields ranging from science and technology to the arts and literature, politics and activism, and beyond. It is also a time to confront honestly the systemic racism and inequalities that persist, and to renew our dedication to dismantling them.
At CCNY/CWE, we believe that diversity is a strength, and we remain committed to fostering an environment where all students, faculty, and staff feel valued, respected, and empowered. Throughout the year, we celebrate Black history and culture while sparking dialogue and promoting understanding through our international academic conferences, lectures, film festivals, workshops, performances, exhibitions, and other community programs. I encourage you to participate in these events and to engage in thoughtful and meaningful conversations with your peers and colleagues. Information about upcoming programs can be found on our website and through campus communications.
Black History Month offers an important opportunity to learn from the past, celebrate the present, and work together to create a more just and equitable future for all. Let us use this time to listen, learn, and uplift the voices and experiences of Black individuals within our community and beyond.
Also, I would like to share some BHM resources, specifically from here:
