About Us

Mission Statement

The Mission of the Department of Chemical Engineering at The City College of New York, CUNY is:

  • to be a leading institution for educating, training, and mentoring students and scholars of diverse backgrounds for industrial, academic, and research careers;
  • to train students to understand, create, and safely control chemical transformations and processes;
  • toresearch, develop, and advance materials, technologies, products, systems and knowledge to benefit New York, the nation, and humanity.

The Chemical Engineering Department of The City College of New York, CUNY, fulfills its mission by bringing to bear methods of scientific inquiry and engineering practice to address problems of practical interest, with particular relevance to the needs of New York City, New York State, and the Nation. Chemical engineers transform matter and energy to make things: materials, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, personal products, and devices, in fields spanning biotechnology, fuels, nanotechnology, and electronics. Our unique combination of mass and energy transport, chemical reactions, separations, basic science, and mathematics equips us to do so in creative and elegant ways.

At The City College of New York, CUNY, we take a personal interest in the success of each of our students. We integrate top-tier undergraduate and graduate educational training with world-class research into fundamental and applied Chemical Engineering science and their associated technologies, thereby preparing our students for successful careers in both traditional and emerging fields.

As part of the first free–and still very affordable–municipal institution of higher education in the Americas, we pride ourselves on the economic, ethnic, and national heritage diversity of our student body. In the words of the College’s founder and legendary innovator in public education, Townsend Harris, “let the children of the rich and poor take their seats together and know of no distinction save that of industry, good conduct, and intellect.”
