9/10/2021: The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry extends its Best Wishes to Emeritus Professor Neil McKelvie and Mara Waldman, who were married on June 27, 2021. Prof. McKelvie, a widower since 2004, taught organic chemistry at CCNY from 1962 to 2007.
4/7/2021: Congratulations to Professor George John, who won the 2021 Edible Application Technology Division Outstanding Achievement Award by the American Oil Chemists' Society. Professor John will describe multifunctional, non-toxic molecular assemblies which heirarchically organize to form 3D structures and solidify oils at the 2021 AOCS Annual Meeting & Expo May 3-14.
3/26/2021: Professor Teresa Bandosz has been awarded a prestigious Japan Society of the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Fellowship in order to conduct research in Japan. She will work at the Sinshu University in Nagano in order to research In-pore confinement-aided utilization of versatile sulfur in energy science. Professor Bandosz's research is in the area of environmental chemistry, in environmental applications of adsorption/desorption phenomena, with the design of new materials for energy related applications, catalysis, gas storage/separation, and photooxidation. She is also Editor for the Journal of Colloid and Interface Science. Says Bandosz: “It’s a great opportunity and I am grateful and honored by the society to take this position and to work with Prof. Kaneko and his research group at Shinshu University, Research Initiative for Supra-Materials, Interdisciplinary Cluster for Cutting Edge Research, on this exiting topic.
10/2020: Dr. Ruth Stark and one of her recent Ph.D. graduates, Christine Chrissian, published the article, Solid-state NMR spectroscopy identifies three classes of lipids in Cryptococcus neoformans melanized cell walls and whole fungal cells in the Journal of Biological Chemistry (more info). Christine Chrissian is the first author in this paper along with Dr. Hsin Wang. Stark and Chrissian also published Tailoring NMR experiments for structural characterization of amorphous biological solids: A practical guide in Solid State Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (more info). Congratulations to all involved in these papers.
11/20/2020: Dorthe Eisele and The Eisele Research Group published the paper “Frenkel excitons in heat-stressed supramolecular nanocomposites enabled by tunable cage-like scaffolding” in the December issue of Nature Chemistry. Their findings could be a significant breakthrough in functionalizing molecular assemblies for future solar energy conversion technologies. (more info)

10/2/2020: The City College of New York is pleased to announce a major gift to establish the Stanley Kushinsky and Jean Carmen Scholarship Fund. The new Fund will support qualified undergraduate or graduate students majoring in chemistry. (read more)
10/5/2020: Professor Maria Tamargo inducted into the National Academy of Engineering. Earlier this year Maria was elected a member of the National Academy of Engineering, for "forging the way toward an inclusive science and engineering research community, and for contributions to molecular-beam epitaxy of semiconductor materials.” This week at the annual meeting, they introduced the new members and will hold a ceremony in person at next year’s meeting. 9/2020: Dr. Ruth Stark, Distinguished Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry along with partners from Lynntech, Inc. were awarded a new Small Business Innovation Research grant from the U.S. Department of Defense to explore large-scale production of melanin pigments in two mammalian cell lines for energy transduction and radiation protection applications.

8/19/2020: Associate Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry Reza Khayat along with Dr. Paul Gottlieb of the CUNY School of Medicine and the company TechnoVax recently announced a breakthrough in the production of virus-like particles that may be useful in the development of a SARS-CoV2 vaccine. 3/25/19: Prof. Lombardi has been awarded the 2019 Gold medal Award of the New York Society for Applied Spectroscopy .
9/29/18: Prof. Biscoe has been awarded a $1,229,084 NIH grant focusing on the development of new, general methods to prepare diverse libraries of enantioenriched molecules for use in drug discovery. A related paper has just been published in Science.
8/23/18: Prof. Jeruzalmi has been awarded a $945K NSF grant entitled "Molecular Mechanisms of Bacterial Helicase Assembly and Activation at a Replication Origin." (more info).
5/11/18: Professor Urs Jans is the winner of the 2017-18 Provost’s Award for Oustanding Teaching. This award recognizes excellence in teaching as acknowledged by peers, current and past students.
4/12/18: Assistant Professor Dorthe M. Eisele has been awarded an NSF CAREER award entitled “Unraveling Excitation-Energy Transfer Processes in Excitonic Light-Harvesting Systems” (abstract at NSF). In addition to cutting-edge research, this award funds educational activities with middle- and high-school students (see here).
3/16/2018: The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry has received an unrestricted gift of $10,000 from Dr. Anthony Roon '68. After conducting NSF-sponsored undergraduate research in Organic Chemistry mentored by Professor Samuel Wilen, he won a prestigious Jonas Salk award to pursue M.D. training at Stanford University. Although Dr. Roon chose CCNY because of the schools affordability, he reports that “I found out that it was the best thing that ever happened to me.” He made this gift as a tribute to the Department; we look forward to hosting him when he visits the CCNY campus on the occasion of his 50th reunion this coming October.
3/5/2018: Professor Stephen O’Brien was recently elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, FRSC (2017), joining two other faculty in the department, Mahesh Lakshman and George John, who also share this honor. Achieving Fellow status in the chemical profession denotes to the wider community a high level of accomplishment as a professional chemist, and that they’ve made an outstanding contribution to the advancement of the chemical sciences; or to the advancement of the chemical sciences as a profession. Election requires sponsorship by Fellows and approval of the RSC Fellows committee. Stephen’s recent research has been at the interface between nanoscience and energy technology
