What Are Matching Gifts?

Many employers will match donations given by their employees to qualified charitable organizations. Some will even double or triple their employees' donations! To determine if your employer will match your donation to the foundation, you may contact your human resources department. Once you've determined that your employer will match your gift, you must complete the matching gift form provided by your employer and send it to the foundation. The foundation will verify your gift, complete the form, and return it to your employer. Once we receive the matching gift from your employer, we will acknowledge both you and your employer for the gift.

Also, sometimes employee spouses and retirees are often eligible as well. If your company matches, request the appropriate forms from the company's Department of Human Resources and mail it with your donations, or process the matching gift request online. Our tax ID number (EIN) is: 13-3850823.

If City College is a public institution, why does it need private donations?

As state and city funding continues at static or decreased level, philanthropy remains critical. Whereas private institutions rely on tuition increases to bridge the gap, our student tuition at a public school is mandated by New York state and is relatively uniform across all City University of New York campuses of varying scale and scope. At approximately $6,600 a year, our tuition is below the national average of $32,405 at a private, four-year college or university. At City College, the premier STEM campus of the CUNY system, our current tuition covers only 55% of the actual cost of educating a student. The rest comes from research grants, federal support, and most importantly, you, the private donor.

Is my gift tax-deductible?

All gifts to City College are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law. The Foundation's tax ID (EIN) number is 84-3867573. You should consult with your tax attorney and/or financial advisor.

Can I give an anonymous gift?

Yes, donors often choose to remain anonymous. City College always respects a donor's stated wish for privacy.

Can I direct my gift to an area important to me?

Yes. We encourage our alumni, student families, and friends to make unrestricted gifts, which give us the flexibility to direct funds toward current needs and opportunities at City College. However, you can designate your contribution to an academic department or division, one of our libraries, or any officially recognized area of the College.

Do small gifts really make a difference?

A little goes a long way at City College. When you make a gift to the College, you join thousands of alumni, parents, friends, students, faculty, and staff who support the institution each year and make a big difference. Donations of all sizes make an impact from helping City College cover the cost of tutoring a student to providing technology and materials for our labs and research initiatives.
